Song of the Moment is a blog series where I share songs that I surprisingly encounter and wish to share with you all. Ranging from solid classics to new songs/albums by up-and-coming artists, I present this series in a way you can be exposed to some new music (or reminded of some tunes from the past) to add to your playlist.
Sung by Sandra "Sandy" Dee Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) in the award-winning musical-movie "Grease," "Hopelessly Devoted to You" expresses Sandy's love for Daniel "Danny" Michael Zucko (John Travolta) in music. I was recently reminded of this tune in an episode of "Glee" (Season 4 Episode 5: "The Role You Were Born to Play.").

Quarantine is now 5-months old and while a lot of Netflix shows and YouTube videos are being consumed, I have been spending many hours binge-watching "Glee," a musical TV show that aired between 2009-2015. While I have many reservations about the plot of the TV show, I cannot deny that it made a lot of the old tunes popular again, either by covering or remixing them. Recently, I encountered an old classic on the show: "Hopelessly Devoted to You."
A classic song from the musical-movie "Grease," I really like this song because it has so much energy, passion, and love while expressing something that is kept under tight secrecy within oneself. It contrasts really well from the tightness and suffocation one feels from a secret crush. In additional contexts, the energy of emotion and passion contrasts greatly from the frustration one feels from the other person not realising your true feelings and your side of the truth, which is what "Glee" played on with this song.
In "Glee," Blaine Anderson (played by Darren Criss) sings this powerful love song after making a serious mistake of cheating on his first love Kurt Hummel (played by Chris Colfer) and they break off their relationship. Compared to the "Grease" version by Olivia Newton-John, Darren Criss really brings depth to this song, giving it a further twist and greater emotion to the song. Plus, the talented Darren Criss adds so much passion to his performance of the song. Have a listen:

LYRICS:
Guess mine is not the first heart broken My eyes are not the first to cry I'm not the first to know there's Just no getting over you
You know I'm just a fool who's willing To sit around and wait for you But baby can't you see there's nothing else for me to do I'm hopelessly devoted to you
But now there's no way to hide Since you pushed my love aside I'm outta my head hopelessly devoted to you Hopelessly devoted to you Hopelessly devoted to you
My head is saying fool forget him My heart is saying don't let go Hold on to the end, that's what I intend to do I'm hopelessly devoted to you
But now there's no way to hide Since you pushed my love aside I'm outta my head hopelessly devoted to you Hopelessly devoted to you Hopelessly devoted to you
